Patterns can be found anywhere. But, like most things in life, they pass unnoticed. We also seem to not pay much attention to texture in our daily life. It is not much different when comes to photography.

I have been doing some research on repetition, patterns and texture the past few days. Luckily, today's perfect spring weather gave me the chance to shoot some pictures, where I can implement what I researched, to show you.

A subject standing alone might look plain and simply boring. But, by simply adding similar objects, shapes, or colours, you can form patterns that will transform the picture and make it visually appealing. And the more you add, the more exciting and complex the patterns become.

Patterns can be used as a backdrop. Thus, be used to influence on how the eye scans the photograph. As Vertical lines draw the eye upwards and give a dynamic feel of movement. Whereas, horizontal lines move the eye across the picture and offer a sense of calmness.

Patterns can also be the main subject. By inserting a break in the pattern, you can make the photograph even more interesting to look at. But, do not forget to apply the rule of thirds. As having the main subject in the center may make the picture less interesting.

The material, from which a subject is made out of, creates its texture. It conveys how the subject feels. Whether it be hard, soft, smooth, or rough.

To properly capture the texture, you must shoot the subject up close by isolating it from other elements to completely reveal the detail.

Lighting plays a huge role when it comes to conveying the texture of a subject. Top, rear or side lighting usually reveal the texture best. Angling the light, by shooting during the golden hour, further, emphasizes on the effect of texture.

Avoid front lighting. As it makes the picture flat and uninteresting. Changing your angle by moving around until a shadow is visible might also help you convey the texture of your subject better.

Applying repetition, patterns, and texture to your pictures will improve them by adding a totally new dynamic and depth.
